2022 Tasar Worlds Promotional Article

The 2022 Tasar World Championships will be held from September 17th through the 25th in Seattle, Washington, USA. The event will be hosted by the Seattle Yacht Club and the Seattle Tasar Fleet at Shilshole Bay Marina, just north of the city center.

A metropolitan city surrounded by water and mountains, Seattle provides amenities to suit all interests from the avid yachtie, to the cosmopolitan visitor, or the history buff.

September is an ideal time for racing in Puget Sound, the sailing venue. The long light air days of mid-summer are gone, replaced with an interesting mix of dry northerly winds (typically 6-15 knots) and moister southerly winds (typically 8-20 knots). The race area, about 2 miles north of Shilshole Bay Marina, is open water with about 15 miles fetch to the North and the South. The water is usually flat in light air, but there can be some nice waves as the breeze increases. The air temperature is typically a high of 72° F (22° C) and a night time low averaging 60° F (15° C). The average sea temperature in September is around 60° F (15° C). Tidal current in the race area is normally under one knot, but varies across the race area and can be a tactical factor. The wind is normally steady, with some small shifts. The crew weight of the two top boats in the Seattle fleet weigh 130 kg and 152 kg, demonstrating that this venue allows a wide range of competitive crew weights. Puget Sound is a challenging but fun and satisfying place to sail – a good all-around sailor will do well here!

Beyond sailing, Seattle is a great place to visit. It is home to many famous modern companies like Boeing, Starbucks, Microsoft, Amazon, to name a few. Historically it was the gateway to Alaska during the Yukon Gold Rush, and the region’s natural bounty has made Seattle into the city it is. Though Western history has a strong foothold in Seattle, original Indigenous cultures still influence the region.

Being a relatively dense US city, it is easy to travel around Seattle. There is public transportation and ride share options, as well as e-bikes and scooters for hire. Getting to the sailing venue with sailing gear will be easiest with a hired car. If you decide to travel outside Seattle, Mt. Rainier and Olympic National Parks are not to be missed. Travel regulations permitting, trips to Victoria and Vancouver Canada are only a few hours away.

Lodging in Seattle is readily available, we recommend looking at AirBNB and VRBO for house rental options close to the racing venue. Billeting will also be available with Seattle Yacht Club members. Detailed information regarding billeting will be available on the event website in the coming weeks.
